Phonics is taught using the 'Read Write Inc.' scheme. Our reading books include those from the publishers 'Read Write Inc.', Oxford Reading Tree, Usborne Reading Books, All Aboard Ginn and Leapfrog.
When we feel confident your child can read 'CVC' words and some 'red' words fluently we introduce reading books to share at home. We provide a reading diary for each child, where we write a comment and encourage you to make comments too. We value the time you spend sharing your child’s reading book at home and appreciate your comments. There are some hints for how to approach reading sessions and suggestions for comments in the reading diaries.
First Aid with St John Ambulance
The children enjoyed stories and rhymes with Kate from St John and learnt about the contents of a first aid kit. The puppets from the story and holding the first aid equipment were the highlights for the children.
Beauty and the Beast was performed at the village hall this afternoon , with the enormous help and skill of ‘Tickled Pink’. The travelling theatre company included the junior children in the pantomime, with speaking, dancing and acting parts. They only had a short time to prepare and rehearse, but the performance was excellent and enjoyed by all.
“I liked it because of the twin sisters fighting.”
“I liked the Beast and Beauty getting married.”
“I liked the mini- X Factor”
“It was really good, times a million!”
“The actors got us involved and they were really kind to us.”
“Their acting was really good and so was ours.”
“This was an excellent opportunity for the children to participate in a show under the skilled direction of professionals. They worked efficiently and successfully with 29 children to produce a highly entertaining performance.”
Visit to Yorkshire Wildlife Park
Class 1 and 2 enjoyed a very busy visit to see lots of wild animals today. We took part in an interesting 'hands on' session and learnt about the defence mechanisms of the millipede, how the giant African land snail eats, handled an ostrich egg and investigated the skull of the polar bear.
We have been thinking about ways to stay healthy and the children made a healthy salad, choosing their own ingredients. They then planned and made their own healthy fruit snack and chose to make a strawberry smoothie with a range of ingredients.
Class 1 enjoyed a visit to St.Lawrence’s Church to learn about the features of the church and special places for Christians. The children had many favourite places in the church, and these included the pulpit, the pews, the candles and the stained glass windows. Some children were able to identify the most important parts of the church, saying
“It is the wine table. It reminds you of Jesus.”
“The cross because Jesus’ body was on it.”
