29th June to 3rd July Weekly update: Reception
How are you all? It has been so long since we have seen some of you but we are always so pleased when you pop up on the Blog or you complete and share some of the tasks we have set for you to do.
Here are some ideas for you this week. Remember you can upload photos of your work straight to Purple Mash and these will then be marked and rewarded that way - please give it a go.
Maths
We are still highly recommending the White Rose Materials to support your child in Maths at home. We are using these to support learners in class too. Next week is week 10 and the story focus is the book ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’, you can hear it read here.
This week’s NRich task can be found here. It is called Water, Water and encourages them to explore capacity and measure through a fun, meaningful context.
To support extending their problem solving skills through games and challenges please take a look at 'I see Maths' Ks1 games too.
Also encourage your child to use their Numbots login regularly for short bursts to practise their recall of number bonds and help to build their robots too. It is absolutely reasonable to type the answers in for them if they are fluently solving the questions but are not able to type them in quickly enough.
English
Phonics for Reception There are some excellent videos for teaching phonics here. The Set 1 videos go over the sounds we have already learnt, with a word time and spelling session and is shown at 9.30. Set 2 videos are learning a new sound and spelling with this sound. There are two new activities, one called ‘Read and hold a sentence’: reading and writing practice for children reading set 1 and 2 sounds, and ‘Red Words’ for practising the tricky words which cannot be decoded.
Reception this week will be using the Oak Academy Materials week 9 English, based around Reptiles. These lessons are best followed in sequence, starting with lesson 1. Included in the lesson are some phonics activities too as well as a quiz to recap the learning. Tap on the green buttons at the bottom of the page to make sure you do all the activities.
Online reading books are available here. Try to do a little bit of reading every day.
Practise handwriting every day.
Write a diary for your favourite days. There is a diary set up in your Purple Mash 2Dos. You can draw a picture and write a sentence or two about what you did. If you tap on the green tick at the top right hand corner, there is a writing checklist and on the left, some prompts to help you along.
There is a phonics activity for you on Purple Mash too.
Storytime with Nick
From Monday 20th April, Storytime with Nick will be released; films of well-loved stories read by Nick Cannon, a trained actor, teacher and trainer and a wonderful storyteller. See him in action here.
Topic
Take a look at the ‘Little Book about Reptiles’ I have allocated in Active Learn – you can click ‘Read to Me’ or share it with a grown up or sibling.
Can you find out what sets Reptiles apart from other animals? Dinosaurs were reptiles, they had many special things about them that made them very successful on Earth.
Can you write an information leaflet using what you have found out in the ‘Reptiles Leaflet’ task I have allocated to you on Purple Mash? Submit your work once you have completed it for us to see and share it with your friends in class.
There’s also a quiz for you to sort the different animals into Reptiles or Not Reptiles for you to play on Purple Mash.

What is in a Hindu Mandir
Hinduism: Watch the video
Think about the five senses and how they are used in the Mandir. Complete the Mandir senses sheet below. Choose a sense and think about how you would welcome someone into your home using that sense, just as God is welcomed into Hindu homes.
