Learning in Reception
All the children entering Reception will continue to follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which guides your child’s learning, development and welfare from birth to five, which means from Preschool or Nursery to the end of their Reception year. The emphasis is on learning through play. We plan activities linked to our current topic and the interests of our children, and make observations to assess the children as they play and take part in group work.
All children undertake a statutory Reception Baseline Assessment on school entry.
The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum is organized into these 7 areas of learning:
Communication and Language
Personal, social and emotional development
Understanding the world
Expressive arts and design
The Early Learning Goals establish the expectations for most children to reach by the end of Reception. This then prepares children for learning in Key Stage 1 which begins in Year 1 when the children will follow the National Curriculum Programme of Study.

Characteristics of Effective Learning
Within the Statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage there are three “Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning”. Displaying these characteristics in their play, signposts us in our observations to what and how the children are learning and what skills they need to develop.
