Outside, children may be able to find more obvious seeds that they are familiar with, e.g. dandelions, conkers, etc. This activity is intended to reveal other smaller seeds in the environment that children might be less familiar with.
Put an old adult-sized sock over one of their shoes and ask them to walk around the garden or grass verges.
Remove the socks and place each in a plastic food bag (do not seal). Spray the contents with water and tape to a warm, sunny window.
Watch what grows!
Help children to understand that seeds have become attached to the sock and have begun to grow because it was put in favourable conditions for plant growth.
Children can try and match the plants growing in the bag to plants on the garden or grass verge? Can you identify the mystery plants?
Watch out for
Put the plastic food bag out of reach of children and keep it damp but not sealed. If the bag is sealed there may be a possibility of mould growth.
