Reading

We love reading at Barlow!

Every child reads daily in class, this happens not only in English lessons but across the curriculum. Children are encouraged to read a variety of texts and have access to our well stocked school library to choose their own book. In addition to this, we have a range of reading initiatives across school to get every child reading and wanting to read.

All our children will read with adults in school one to one, in small groups or as a whole class using our Little Wandle phonics reading books, book banded books, curriculum text or a reading for pleasure book.  Older children will access fluency sessions where children learn how to read at pace and with expression. This is done during whole class sessions and some children will access this in small groups. Children are also given a book banded book to read at home and in school. Children's reading is assessed termly so that children are on the correct book level for their stage of reading development. We encourage parents to read regularly at home with their children for pleasure and to encourage children to read their school books and record any comments in the reading record. We also read aloud daily to our children whatever their age, to instil a joy of reading.

If you'd like to volunteer to help listen to children read, then please do get in touch with the office as we'd be more than happy to have you in school.
