It is essential to establish a good pencil grip early. This can be helped by using chunky pencils. If your child is having difficulty, follow these instructions:
Grip your small folded bit of tissue in your last two fingers first and then pick up your pencil with the remaining three fingers with a triangulating grip.

Letters are grouped into families with similar formation. There are 'curly caterpillar letters', 'one armed robot letters', 'long ladder letters' and 'zigzag letters'.
Please use the sheets below to practise. At the end of year 1 and beginning of year 2, children should start to use cursive writing. There are sheets to practise these too.
