PE is a core subject and is an important part of our curriculum that takes place twice a week.

PE kit

All children should wear:

• White T-shirt
• Black shorts, jogging bottoms or leggings
• Plimsolls or trainers
• A school jumper or cardigan

Children must not wear jewellery (earrings, bracelets, watches etc.) for PE and long hair must be tied back. If children cannot take their earring/s out, then ear tape will be provided.

Our aims for the PE Curriculum (Intent)

PE at Barlow Church of England Primary School aims to provide a fun, high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all to take part in a range of physical activity. We provide children with opportunities to support their holistic development to become physically confident, whilst encouraging pupils to adopt a healthy lifestyle. PE at Barlow is an integral element of the curriculum where we promote the need for resilience and perseverance with skills that may have once felt challenging. We strongly believe children should acquire the skills to effectively cooperate and collaborate with one another during competitive/non-competitive games.

How we teach the PE curriculum (Implementation)

Real PE is the programme we use that promotes progression of core and fundamental skills from Foundation to Year 6. At the start of each unit, teachers take time to recap the core skills children have previously learnt and throughout the unit, children are encouraged consistently. We teach in a variety of ways to capture the interests and skills of our children, these may include:

• Practise and repetition of core skills to promote efficiency
• Demonstrations to promote progress for all (videos and live skills)
• Evaluation their own performance and their peers to fine-tune their efficiency of the skills they have learnt
• Appreciation of own and others strengths and weaknesses.
• Sporting events and sports day
• Evaluating efficient ways in which to work
• Use of teamwork to play competitive games.
