This week, we are practising finding the meaning of words.

Y4, your sheet asks you to work out a word or phrase that means the same as the word written in bold.  Set out each word in pairs.

e.g.   4. dawn - sunrise

You might need to check a dictionary if you are unsure.

Y3, you need to read the sentences, look at the word in bold and find the word from the witch's list that means the same.  Set out:

 Today we are going to practise using prefixes to change the meaning of nouns.  Mrs Watkin will be sharing this with you live online at 10:00.  You can find a programme called ‘Super and mini nouns’ on Active Learn. On screen 1, all of the words are nouns.  Click each picture on screen 1 and watch the word change when we add a prefix.  How does the prefix change the meaning of each word? 

Try the same with Screen 2  and Screen 3.

Time to get creative.  Choose an animal (e.g. sheep, frog) and imagine it as a ‘super’ version (e.g. supersheep, superfrog). Then draw it and label it with appropriate super-abilities (e.g. supersight, superspeed), plus super-clothes (e.g. supercape), plus any other super-items.

Then think of  a place (e.g. a classroom or a farm) and imagine it as a ‘mini’ version (mini-classroom, mini-farm). Draw and label all the mini-nouns you can think of in your place.

Top tip: when adding a prefix to a word, we do not usually need a hyphen. However if it makes the new word difficult to read for some reason, a hyphen is usually added for clarity.

Just click on the power maths tab then find textbook 4b or 3b.  Mrs Watkin will be teaching Y4 at 10:30 and Y3 at 11:15 live online.  Join us to go through the text book section together then complete your practice book independently and upload a photo of your work.
